Cardiff Castle

I rode the hopon/hopoff bus tour around Cardiff for a couple of hours and then decided to visit Cardiff Castle today.

There has been some form of structure on this site for the last 2000 years starting with Roman Walls and then Norman Keep and the present day Castle.

This is the start of the guided tour

Some victorian period decoration. This was a room for the men to smoke and drink after dinner.

This is the victorian era nursery.

The main banquet hall

This is at the top of one of the towers and although somewhat Roman in appearance is 19th Century.  The interesting thing about this is the protection that has been created to prevent acid rain from destroying the marble.

As the original structure was open to the sky the need to protect the marble was originally an A frame protecting the structure. When this collapsed a new solution had to be found. This was an inflatable roof which fits in the space above the structure and protects it from rain. When it snows (Not at the moment) a computer deflates the roof so the snow falls off.

This roof cost them 15,000 pounds

This is the library of Cardiff Castle. It apparently has been the setting for the TARDIS Library in some episodes (Need to see them again to figure out which)

This is the original Norman Keep that is in the centre of the castle. I didn't climb the stairs and go inside, but it empty anyway.

I had forgotten that the Panasonic Lumix TZ30 has an inbuilt Panorama function. You just select it and turn in a circle and it stitches the frames into a single photo (See Below).

For fans of Scrapheap Challenge should recognise this particular piece of history.

The exterior wall of the castle contains some of the original Roman Structure. That is the section below the red border.

Had lunch at the castle cafeteria. It was really nice Bangers and Mash with Peas.

Going on a bus tour tomorrow.
